Exploring in Crestholme! We recently chatted with Charmain Holloway and she told us all about “Muddy Paws” A bit of a small farm meander experience in a forgotten area, just 40 minutes outside of Durban…
A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE AT THE EDGE OF THE VALLEY OF THOUSAND HILLS
“Muddy Paws Farm is a little hobby herb farm, nestled in Crestholme. So where is Crestholme? That is the first question we normally encounter when people ask about where our little herb nursery and shop is. So did we, until we decided to pursue our dream of country living on a smallholding and discovered this wonderful area just outside of Waterfall, just 38 km outside of Durban centre, 15 years ago”
“When the first rains came so did the muddy paw prints from our three dogs and 2 cats on our vast tiled kitchen floor which became a frequent occurrence as was the resultant admonishing screech of “MUDDY PAWS!!”, causing the evolution of the name – MUDDY PAWS FARM. Quite logical, I would think.”
“After many years of trying to balance a creative arts teaching career at a private school with a passion for community, homesteading and herbs, we decided to marry the two. We created a unique venue where folk can buy organically grown herbs and plants, shop for herb tinctures, teas, soaps, local produce, crafts, all homemade and handmade with love by our community.”
There is a simple self-service tea garden available on Saturdays where you can enjoy a peaceful cuppa.
“We created a multi-purpose space adjacent to the shop area, known as the Pink Geranium Art Studio, which is used to host school groups with up to 30 children at a time. The Pink Geranium Art Studio is where the ever popular farm & craft camps, music, drama, and art classes for children, and creative craft workshops for both adults and children are held”
The Pink Geranium Art Studio space may also be hired for small private functions.
“Children just love the rustic setting, they delight in watching the free-range hens scratching in the ground and Hansie the goat’s antics. The star of the show, of course, is Eeyore the donkey who loves a good scratch. There is also a tyre swing which the little ones delight in climbing and swinging on”
“We invite you to join us where locals, neighbouring communities and travelers alike gather to enjoy a beautiful space that offers creative inspiration and so much more” – Charmaine Holloway
